Working Together to Turn Possibilities into
Opportunity during the Transition to Adulthood

Work Together NC is a Community Collaborative of self-advocates, family members, employers, educators, and service providers involved in systems change to increase employment opportunities for people with IDD. The WTNC team will provide an overview of the project. After their short presentation there will be a listening session where attendees will be invited to talk about their ideas for improving the transition process.

Suicide Prevention for People on the
Autism Spectrum

Brenna Maddox, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor at UNC, Department of Psychiatry

Autistic individuals are at heightened risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Dr. Maddox will share information about risk factors, warning signs, and crisis supports for this population, highlighting the importance of engaging stakeholders with lived experience.

Disability Rights NC (DRNC), our state’s Protection and Advocacy organization for people with disabilities, works to support voters with disabilities in understanding and exercising their right to vote. Voters with disabilities are the most disenfranchised group of voters. Hear how DRNC combats this disparity and educates folks on the best ways to exercise their right to vote.

Benefits of Physical Activity: Strategies to Support Health and Build Community

Associate Professor in the UNC-CH School of Education and a Faculty Fellow at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute

The presenters are co-principal investigators of a physical activity program for adults with IDD. Their work aims to promote health and wellbeing for these individuals and others. They will describe benefits of physical activity and inclusive community participation and provide information including strategies for supporting physical activity for adults with intellectual disability.
