Our discussion involves the story about the intersection between the lives of two professional
Black men and fathers in the IDD world and creating safe spaces for young people with IDD.
Darrin will share about his journey from working in the correctional system to opening group
homes for individuals with IDD. Michael will discuss his role as a father raising and
transitioning a son with special needs. Together, Darrin and Michael will address racial and
health disparities affecting people with IDD, their families, and how their unique partnership
is making a difference in North Carolina.

neurodevelopmental conditions in addition to strategies for evaluating and addressing
sleep challenges.

the Autism Society of NC, CIDD Faculty, Mother and Author/Co-Author of four books on the subject of Autism
Baiyina Muhammad, Ph.D. - Associate Professor of History at
NCCU and currently working to earn her MA from NCSU. She has a Certificate in
Autism from East Carolina University and was a LEND Trainee at the CIDD.
"Changing Paths: Post-Secondary Options
Pathways for Students with Disabilities"
The speakers, both parents of young men with ASD, will describe their sons’ college
experiences - one in a program supporting students with I/DD, and one fully included with
general campus supports. Discussion will include challenges students with autism or
I/DD often face, how to access supports, the parent’s role in supporting the student, and
how parents can prepare the student for a successful transition to college.
