Steps Toward Independence and Responsibility (STIR)
Project STIR (Steps Toward Independence and Responsibility) provides leadership for inclusion and advocacy. An inclusive team of trainers with and without developmental disabilities presents interactive workshops and provides technical assistance to address a range of topics. Examples of Project STIR efforts include completing three Projects of National Significance; each three-year project offered hands-on training, capacity-building activities, and materials development and dissemination for such targeted audiences as self-advocate leaders, high school students with disabilities, and emerging youth leaders. Project STIR collaborates with local, state, and national agencies and organizations to increase awareness of inclusion, self-advocacy, and self-determination. A partial list of these partners includes NC Council on Developmental Disabilities, NC Department of Public Instruction, Family Support Program, NC Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, and the Ohio Self-Determination Association.
